I struggle with the art of relaxation, it is incredibly easy to get caught up in the craziness of life. Just recently I was lucky enough to spend a few days at a remote cabin and it gave me time to breathe. Knowing that responsibilities were miles away, my stress melted away and a sense of euphoria was in the air. From fishing for hours to practicing yoga on a dock and canoeing during sunset, my heart was happy. If you don’t have plans to relax today for a few minutes, make some!

The Benefits of Relaxation

Not only does it feel wonderful to relieve your mind and body from daily stresses, but it is also extremely healthful. According to the McKinley Health Center, relaxing can decrease heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, metabolic rate, and oxygen consumption. Amongst all the amazing health benefits, relaxation can also make you a happier person!

Ways to Relax

Your body needs some relaxation time every day, and there are many ways to do that! Mental Health America suggests petting a dog for 15 minutes to release serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin (the body’s feel-good hormones). Human touch is also a serotonin release, give someone you love a hug or cuddle and let the stress fade away. Below are a couple of videos to help ease some stress, from meditation to breathing techniques. Focus on your health and wellness today and your future self will thank you!

This meditation will help you feel relaxed while giving off positive vibes. Play this in the morning to start off your day in a wonderful way!

Adriene creates beautiful yoga flows on youtube, and I suggest checking out a variety of her videos. This gentle, relaxing, and cozy flow will awaken and relax you in all the right ways. Yoga for Change and Drain from Yoga With Adriene is also amazing for rooting down and connecting to yourself.

Candace Alexander, MEd CHES, director of the American Lung Association health promotions, shares a three-minute mindful breathing session. Her voice is so calming, and you have the time to listen to her and soothe your soul!

Find Your Peace

Everyone has different ways of relaxing, and you have to find which one fits you. I turn to yoga and fly fishing when I want a release from reality. Knitting, kayaking, painting, baking, getting outdoors, and spending time with loved ones are all great ways to relax.

I hope you are able to find time to release and focus inward today. Share your favorite ways to relax with Live Breathe Alaska on Instagram or Facebook!
