Cloudy days sometimes make for the best days, and that was definitely true when I hiked to Rabbit Lake with my friends Kaylee and Karin. The 8.8-mile round-trip hike was moderate with a gradual incline to the beautiful alpine lake.

The trail starts at the top of Canyon Road in South Anchorage and brings you between deep brush until you meet rolling hills in the valley. Watch out for animals in the brush, we saw a moose, birds, and a ladybug amongst the bushes. Also, make sure to bring waterproof or submersible shoes because water runs down the trail in multiple locations.

After the third mile, the gradual uphill became even more gradual and we had amazing views of the valley. Clouds grazed nearby mountain peaks and set a mystical mood for our hike. As we chatted and watched the dogs play, everything felt at peace and our hearts were happy.

We all were overjoyed when we saw Rabbit Lake, it looked like something out of a movie. There were a few other people enjoying the views but we found a nice place to rest and have some snacks. Sitting next to the lake we gazed upon the large peaks above us while munching on Karin’s homemade guacamole.
Our journey back felt a bit easier considering it was mostly downhill and gave us a wonderful view of Anchorage and Fire Island. We made our way back to the parking lot and headed to Tikatnu for some tasty Thai food. It was well deserved after our four-hour hike!
