Welcome to the second Exploring Alaska with Tia article, I have somehow found myself in Seward the last three weekends and decided to share my adventures. From fishing to hiking, Seward is a quaint town with an abundance of activities that makes for great fun. Below are some of my favorite things that I experienced while in Seward.

Deep-Sea Fishing

My brother and I were lucky enough to go out fishing with a family friend and caught a cod. We lucked out and had calm seas with no seasickness, yay! I cannot wait to go back out and catch some halibut in the future.

There are some great fishing charters in Seward that can get you hooked on huge halibut and King Salmon. Even if nothing gets caught, the beauty of the scenery is worth the boat ride!

Hiking

Seward has a variety of hiking trails that lead through mossy forests or up rocky mountains. Mount Marathon is a challenging but popular hike that gives amazing views of Seward and the ocean, I have yet to do it but it’s on my list!

While I was in Seward, I went for a nice two-mile hike (4 miles roundtrip) to Tonsina Point. The hike was fairly easy and brought us to the ocean where we had amazing views. My friends and I made designs in the sand while we watched the tide come in.

A popular hike near Seward is Exit Glacier, which we were planning to do but it was unfortunately closed due to a moose and firearm discharge. My friend and I decided to do a nearby river walk that gave us views of the glacier and let us soak our feet in the chilly water.

Although it wasn’t what we had planned to do, it was still a blast. Of course, we had to celebrate our mini-hike by taking a jumping picture! Tag #livebreathealaska on social media to share your fun outdoor adventures.

Snagging for Salmon

Salmon snagging in the ocean is a very Alaskan activity that I don’t think you’ll experience anywhere else in the world. There is nothing pretty about it, a weighted treble hook is swung through the water in an attempt to snag salmon. Many families attend this busy event and fill their freezers for the season.

salmon vacuum seal

I helped vacuum seal some Salmon and even lucked out and got to eat some of it. Nothing beats fresh Salmon, it is absolutely scrumptious.

Wandering the Beach

A trip to Seward wouldn’t be complete without walking next to the ocean and looking for unique shells or seaweed. My friends and I strolled along the beach and found all sorts of fun things!

I highly suggest Seward as an overnight trip with friends and family. If you enjoy outdoor activities, this seaside town has something for you! Check out Seward’s website for more information and things to do.
